Report names victims in weekend I-80 pileup on icy stretch NE of Iowa City

The victims in a 16-vehicle pileup that blocked Interstate 80 just northeast of Iowa City over the weekend havebeen identified as a man from Iowa and another from Texas.

The Iowa State Patrol said Monday that David L. Mosinski, 57, of Fairfield, and Junier Caballero-Venero, 37, of Houston both suffered fatal injuries.

According to a state patrol incident report, the chain-reaction crash began at 5:35 a.m. Sunday when a semi trailer driven by Johan Caballero-Venero, 37, of Houston lost control and jacknifed on an icy stretch of Interstate 80 near the North Dodge Street exit, blocking all three westbound lanes of the highway.

The report said a Chevrolet driven by Mosinski struck the truck's trailer, killing Mosinski. It said Junier Caballero-Veneros, a passenger in Johan Caballero-Venero's truck, got out after the initial crash and then suffered a fatal injury.

The report did not say how Junier Caballero-Venero was killed, but it listed a third vehicle, a Toyota driven by Megan Ramirez, 47, of LeClaire, as being involved in the wreck.

According to a previous report, eight other semi trailers were among the vehicles that also crashed. It said 15 vehicles in total were involved, but the report released Monday said there were 16.

The westbound lanes of I-80 were blocked while the crash was investigated.

Trooper Robert Conrad, in a statement, blamed driver inattention for the accident.

No further details were released.
