Report: Patriots hire Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator

A familiar face is returning to Foxboro.
The New England Patriots have reportedly hired Bill O’Brien as their new offensive coordinator.
“O’Brien has returned to New England and is being named the Patriots offensive coordinator,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said, citing sources.

O’Brien, who was born of Dorchester and grew up in Andover, will take over the job from Matt Patricia, whose future with the Patriots remains unclear.
O’Brien last worked under Nick Saban as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the University of Alabama.
He joined the Crimson Tide after he was fired from his head coaching job with the Houston Texans in 2020. He had held the job since 2014.
The 53-year-old’s presence on the coaching staff should aid in the development of Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. During his time in Tuscaloosa, O’Brien coached quarterback Bryce Young, who won the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore in 2021.
O’Brien also worked on Bill Belichick’s staff as an assistant coach for the Patriots from 2007-2011.
