New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones suffered a “pretty severe” ankle injury in his team’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon, according to a new report.

Testing conducted on Monday confirmed Jones suffered a high ankle sprain, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported. X-Rays on his ankle immediately following the game were negative.

In a tweet, Pelissero said, “The hope is Jones won’t need surgery. Timetable still TBD but hard to imagine he plays this week vs. the Packers.”

Mike Giardi, also of the NFL Network, reported that Jones has a “significant tear,” which is what the Patriots feared. A team source told Giardi that he’d be “surprised if Jones avoids surgery, especially knowing it could speed up healing.”

Pelissero noted that Jones is getting a second opinion on the injury before any decisions are made.

Jones hopped off the field, unable to put any weight on his left leg immediately after Ravens lineman Calais Campbell brought him down in the backfield near the end of the game.

Jones grimaced in pain, reached for his ankle and then pulled himself up on one leg before hopping off the field and heading to the locker room. Photos of him heading down the stairs, with someone under each arm to help him, also showed him in what appeared to be extreme pain.

Jones also left last week’s game, a 17-14 victory over Pittsburgh, with a back injury.

If Jones is forced to miss time, veteran backup Brian Hoyer will likely be called upon to start games.
