Although the NBA season is only through 17 games, trade rumors are already buzzing. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans have discussed a potential deal that involves Kelly Oubre Jr. However, there isn’t traction on the deal yet, per Charania.

In November, Oubre Jr. was traded to the Warriors from the Oklahoma City Thunder for a pair of 2021 draft picks. Prior to landing in the Bay Area, Oubre Jr. spent the 2019-20 season with the Phoenix Suns. Oubre Jr. was included in a trade package to the Thunder for veteran point guard Chris Paul.

Oubre Jr.’s start with the Warriors hasn’t been smooth. Through 17 games, the former first-round pick has been quiet in Golden State, averaging 11.6 points on 35.5% shooting from the field with 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Oubre Jr.’s shooting percentage is currently a career-low. The Kansas product has especially struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 21.8% on 5.1 attempts per contest. Oubre Jr. started the season drilling only two of his first 30 attempts from long distance.

Despite his low shooting numbers, Ourbe Jr has made a solid impact on the defensive side of the floor. Oubre Jr. has consistently matched up with one of the top scorers from the opposing team in each of Golden State’s games. The 25-year-old wing is averaging 1.2 steals and 0.9 blocks in 28.1 minutes per game.

Oubre Jr. looks like he’s beginning to become more comfortable in Steve Kerr’s offense of late, scoring in double-figures in six of his last eight contests for the Warriors.

There is still a lot of basketball left to play before the Warriors have to start making plans for the trade deadline. The NBA trade deadline is slated for Thursday, March 25.
