Report: Ryan Walters picks WVU offensive coordinator Graham Harrell to run Purdue offense

When Purdue hired Ryan Walters, a defensive coordinator, as its new head coach, one of the biggest questions to follow was: Who would be running the offense?

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, Graham Harrell will become the Boilermakers’ offensive coordinator after spending the past season in the same position at West Virginia.

Before that, Harrell, 37, was offensive coordinator for three seasons at USC and three at North Texas. WVU averaged 30 points per game last season.

He played at quarterback under Mike Leach at Texas Tech where he set the single-season program record for touchdown passes in 2003 and career touchdown passes. His records for yards in a season and career passing yards have since been broken. He won a Super Bowl as a backup with the Green Bay Packers in 2012.

Harrell will likely have more responsibilities than the defensive coordinator, as Walters is a longtime defensive assistant and plans to bring his own scheme to Purdue, possibly to call his own plays.

Walters was officially hired earlier this week and isn’t involved in Purdue’s bowl game preparation, instead spending the coming weeks recruiting and assembling his staff.
