Report: Skier dies after suffering injury on Harbor Springs slopes

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A skier has reportedly died after suffering an injury while riding the slopes over the weekend at a resort in northern Michigan.

The Petoskey News-Review reported Tuesday that a man suffered a head injury on Friday at The Highlands at Harbor Springs and passed away from his injuries.

A spokesperson with the resort confirmed to News 8 that the incident happened Friday evening. Ski patrol was called at 8:42 p.m. for an incident on a black diamond trail, which is considered an extremely difficult terrain.

Ski patrol personnel administered first aid, started CPR and went with the ambulance to a nearby hospital.

“All trails have markers that display green circles (easiest), blue squares (more difficult), black diamonds (most difficult) or double black diamonds (experts only). Terrain level for trails is also marked on our trail maps, found in various locations on the slopes and online,” Highlands spokesperson Erin Ernst told News 8.

Ski patrol personnel also noted the skier was not wearing a helmet. Ernst said skiers are advised to wear helmets on all terrains.
