Report: Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr. closing in on agreement
Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. reportedly a step closer to happening.
The welterweight titleholders are nearing an agreement to face one another in a unification bout on Nov. 12 or Nov. 19, according to boxing insider Dan Rafael. It is likely to happen in Las Vegas.
Rafael cited “multiple sources.”
Crawford-Spence is one of the biggest-possible fight in boxing. They are both on Boxing Junkie’s pound-for-pound list, Crawford No. 1 and Spence No. 4. They’re both unbeaten. And they’re both fun to watch.
Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) is coming off the biggest victory of his career, a 10th-round knockout of former beltholder Shawn Porter in November. The only question about Crawford might be his age, 34, although he hasn’t shown signs of slowing down.
Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) last fought in April, when he stopped Yordenis Ugas in a title-unification bout.
Fans have clamored for the fight for years but the couldn’t come together, in part because they were handled by competing entities. The fact Crawford became a free agent after the Porter victory made the matchup more likely, as we evidently are witnessing.
“There’s nothing standing in the way from us fighting,” Crawford told ESPN in April. “There’s no promotion company that’s blocking it, there’s no wrong side of the street, there’s no nothing.
“Let’s see who the best welterweight in the world is.”
Rafael also reported that welterweight contenders Eimantas Stanionis and Cody Crowley could meet on the undercard.
