Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy to play skins event in Japan
Fresh off a couple disappointing performances in the Open Championship comes a report that Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will be competing in a skins game competition in Japan this October.
Per ESPN, Woods and McIlroy will play in the one-day, big-money event alongside Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama. The event will take place on Oct. 21 at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Japan.
Shortly afterward, Woods will be playing in the Zozo Championship, a new PGA Tour event taking place near Tokyo.
The skins game competition used to be a Thanksgiving staple, as the world’s best golfers would hammer away at each other trying to pocket ever-increasing sums of money. In a standard skins game, each hole has a monetary value, and whoever wins the hole outright gets the cash. If the hole ties, the money carries over to the next hole. Woods, per ESPN, played in televised skins games seven times but never won.
Both Woods and McIlroy are coming off disappointing weeks at the Open Championship. Both missed the cut, as did Day and Matsuyama. McIlroy is in the midst of a long major drought, while Woods has faltered in the months since winning The Masters.
The skins event will be part of Woods’ GolfTV endeavor, a project that delivers Woods-based content to international broadcast outlets.
