Report: Vikings rookie QB Kellen Mond close to signing his contract

The majority of Minnesota’s 11-player draft class has already agreed to terms with deals. The Vikings, however, have three players who have yet to sign their contracts.

According to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, one of those rookies is getting closer. Tomasson reported that rookie quarterback and third-round pick Kellen Mond is expected to earn a four-year, $5.223 million deal, including a signing bonus of $1.158 million. Mond will count $949,712 against the 2021 salary cap, per Tomasson.

Mond is presumably right below Kirk Cousins on the quarterback depth chart for 2021 and probably beyond that. Mond’s development will be crucial to the long-term outlook of this team. Of course, the Vikings can win with Cousins, but his contract does make it harder to build a stacked team around him. If Mond can thrive while on a rookie deal, that could change things. So it’s a good sign he’s getting close to a deal.
