Reports of fireworks in Abilene city limits down from 2021

The Abilene Police Department received fewer fireworks-related calls during this year's Fourth of July holiday than last year.

Between 9 p.m. Friday through Monday night, residents could report fireworks set off within the city limits to a hotline, which allowed 911 to remain open for emergency calls.

Fireworks calls totaled 3,409 between Friday and Monday, police said, compared to 3,773 for a comparable three-day period in 2021.

The July 4, 2021, holiday that fell on a Sunday in 2021 saw 1,134 calls about fireworks. The number was 1,056 on Monday this year.

Police did not release a total number of illegal fireworks citations issued. But in a police report Tuesday morning was a listing of one fireworks citation issued about 11 p.m. Monday to a man in the 500 block of Butternut Street.
