Former Texas Tech all-America third baseman Josh Jung will be called up by the Texas Rangers on Thursday, Dallas-Fort Worth media reported, putting him in position to make his Major League debut during a home series that starts Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Rangers drafted Jung in the first round, No. 8 overall, in 2019. He has played only 101 games above Class A.

Jung didn't get to play in 2020 because of the Covid pandemic, then missed part of the 2021 season after foot surgery and a big portion of this season after surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. In eight games this season with the Rangers' Arizona League rookie team and 23 games at Triple-A Round Rock, he's batting .266 with nine home runs and 29 runs batted in.

In Jung's first 12 games at Round Rock, from Aug. 9-24, he batted .340 with six homers and 19 RBI. Since then, he's hit .204 with no homers and five RBI. In September, he has 14 strikeouts in 25 at-bats.

Tech (1-2-3) has scored only three goals in its past five matches, though the Red Raiders have managed ties with New Mexico, Cal State Fullerton and, most recently, on Sunday at St. Mary's (Calif.).

Macy Blackburn has been out with an injury since she had three assists in the first three matches, the only assists the Red Raiders have this season. Tech coach Tom Stone said Wednesday he hopes she can return by the Big 12 opener on Sept. 22 against West Virginia.

Macy Schultz, Charlotte Teeter and Ashleigh Williams have one goal apiece. Opponents have gotten only three shots past Tech goalkeeper Madison White, who has a 0.50 goals-against average.

Houston (2-2-1) evened its record with a 3-1 victory Sunday against Rice. The Cougars tied Oklahoma in their opener and sandwiched losses to Lamar and Baylor around a win at Sam Houston State.
