VfB Stuttgart want to renew the contract of their successful coach Sebastian Hoeneß beyond 2025, according to German news reports on Thursday.

The Stuttgarter Nachrichten and Stuttgarter Zeitung papers said that preliminary talks have been held and are to move to the next stage in the near future. The Bild daily also reported that Stuttgart were seeking an early renewal.

Hoeneß, 41, took over at Stuttgart in April 2023 and saved them from relegation. This term Stuttgart are playing superbly and in third place in the Bundesliga are eyeing a Champions League berth.

The news comes amid speculation that Hoeneß could be a candidate for the Bayern Munich job, after the champions said on Wednesday that they would part ways with Thomas Tuchel after the season.

Hoeneß is the son of former Bayern striker Dieter Hoeneß and the nephew of ex-Bayern winger and president Uli Hoeneß. He has a Bayern history as youth and reserve team coach, winning the third division title with the reserves in 2020.
