Reproductive Rights Coalition holds Mother’s Day rally at Freedom Park

The Reproductive Rights Coalition of Charlotte held a Mother’s Day Rally on Saturday to advocate for reproductive freedom at Freedom Park.

The group is advocating for safe access to abortion.

The gathering comes after a leaked draft opinion showed the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade.

A reversal of the 1973 landmark ruling would allow individual states to more heavily regulate or ban abortion.

Neither North Carolina nor South Carolina have “trigger laws” that would immediately ban abortion, but access could change significantly.

Dozens of abortion rights supporters said the leak prompted an urgent response from the Charlotte community.

Hope Robertson, a board member with the Reproductive Rights Coalition of Charlotte, said the organization wants to support women’s rights locally and nationally.

“When news broke of the leak from SCOTUS, we felt it was a need for an instant response, “ Robertson said.

Robertson said they scrambled to get the event together as soon as possible, and the response was more than they could have expected.

“So many people have shown up with signs, prepared... (That) says that people are passionate. The community is desperate for our freedoms. Abortion is just a tip of the iceberg,” Robertson said.
