Republican candidates for House District 32 still waiting on results of Indiana primary

Jaworowski concedes in HD 32 Republican primary

Hours after the polls closed Tuesday, as winners were declared in other statewide primary races, the results of the Republican primary for the new House District 32 seat was too close to call.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the most recent results available show the Associated Press had yet to call the race and the top two candidates were separated by 0.1%.

With 98.84% of the estimated vote counted, two-term Hamilton County Councilor Fred Glynn led with 44.3% of the vote over Suzie Jaworowski with 44.2% of the vote. Jaworowski ran former president Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign in Indiana and worked in the Department of Energy under former secretary Rick Perry.

Paul Nix, of Fishers, followed the other candidates with 11.5% of the vote.

Jaworowski on Wednesday morning said she was waiting to see what would happen with the results of the race before deciding whether to request a recount.

“I want to make sure that all the final votes are counted and then make a decision after that," she said.

A call to Glynn was not immediately returned.

According to the state election administrator's manual, Indiana does not have automatic recounts.

"Instead, specific individuals may petition the courts (local office) or state recount commission (statewide, state legislative, or federal offices) to request a recount," the manual states.

The State Recount Commission deals with recounts for federal, statewide or state legislative offices, according to the manual.

Candidates who want to request a recount have 14 days after the election to file "a verified petition for recount" with the circuit or superior court of the county, according to the manual.

As of mid-April, Glynn had about $38,000 in cash on hand, according to campaign finance reports, outraising Jaworowski, who had about $6,000 in cash on hand in the same time frame.

Glynn was endorsed by the Liberty Defense political action committee, a far right group seeking to oust establishment lawmakers.

The new House District 32 seat, which was formed after legislative redistricting last year, mostly covers southern parts of Hamilton County and dips into northern Marion County.

The three candidates in the Republican primary said they were drawn to the race due to it being a new seat without an incumbent.

During the campaign, all three candidates expressed interest in education, public safety and issues surrounding gender and sexuality.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democratic candidate Victoria Garcia Wilburn in the general election later this year. Wilburn ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
