Republican Committee holding convention

Mar. 11—It's convention time again for Republicans across Georgia.

The big day is Saturday in all 159 counties in the Peach State.

All of the fanfare and excitement about the election of a new slate of officers, as well as the election of delegates and alternate delegates to other conventions by the Baldwin County Republican Committee will start at 9 a.m. The local political convention is being held at Victory Baptist Church and is expected to last until about 11:30 a.m.

Janice Westmoreland, chairwoman of the local Republican committee said those attending the convention will get an opportunity to hear from two members of the Georgia legislature.

Sen. Rick Williams (R-Milledgeville) and Rep. Ken Vance (R-Milledgeville) are expected to speak about some of the action taken by state lawmakers during this year's General Assembly.

"This is the beginning of the whole convention process at the county level," Westmoreland said. "We elect delegates and alternate delegates to the district and state conventions. We're one of the 159 counties expected to hold a county convention Saturday."

Westmoreland said another speaker during the local event will be Vikki Consiglio.

"She is actually the assistant treasurer of the Georgia State Party," Westmoreland said. "She is now running for the office of treasurer this time around."

She and her husband, Bill, are two of the newest members of the Baldwin County Republican Committee.

"That is a real big asset for us as a county committee," Westmoreland said. "We're delighted to have them in our community."

Another guest speaker will include Baldwin County Solicitor General Skye Gess.

The local convention is expected to draw several Republican Committee members.

But it's also a good time for those wishing to join the political party to come out and see what goes on.

"I think it would be a great time for them to come and check it all out," Westmoreland said, noting she and other local officials want to increase the size of the local political committee.

She said when new members join the Baldwin County Republican Committee and go to vote, they would merely fill out a form and pledge support to the Republican Party.

"I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and I hope we have a real good turnout," Westmoreland said.
