New Hampshire's gubernatorial candidates

Sununu was voted into office in 2016 and is running for a second term in office. Prior to his time as governor, he was a part of the New Hampshire Executive Council. Politics runs in the Sununu family: his father, John H. Sununu, was also the governor of New Hampshire, and his brother, John E. Sununu, was a member of the US Senate.

Sununu's challenger, Sherman, is a state senator of the New Hampshire State  Senate, a position he's held since late 2018. He's also a former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Outside of politics, Sherman's a gastroenterologist.

New Hampshire's voting history

New Hampshire backed President Joe Biden over former President Donald Trump by a 7 percentage point margin of victory in 2020. This race is one of six Republican-held governorships up for election in a state carried by Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

What experts say

The race between Sununu and Sherman is rated as "solid Republican" by Inside Elections, "solid Republican" by The Cook Political Report, and "safe Republican" by Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
