Republican primary for NM House of Representatives District 51 race too close to call

A recount of the ballots cast in the Republican primary for the District 51 State Representative is likely following close returns among the two candidates.

Vying for the Republican spot on the November ballot are incumbent Rachel Black and opponent John Block.

Black received 1,494 votes or 49% of ballots in the unofficial June 8 results, while Block received 1,540 votes or 51%.

The Otero County Clerk's Office was still counting ballots Wednesday morning. Officials said the race was not called in favor of either GOP candidate as of 9 a.m.

The Democratic ticket is uncontested with Sharonlee Cummins as the sole candidate.

Come November, the winner will face Cummins for the District 51 State House of Representatives seat.
