Republicans should be as rational on guns as New Zealand: Readers sound off

Letter to the editor:

After the horrific mass shooting in Christchurch, that killed 50 Muslims in New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised to eliminate semi-automatic weapons. I guess it makes a huge difference when lives matter more than a National Rifle Association rating.

Republicans in Congress witness a mass shooting what seems like every few weeks around our country, and yet they can’t even agree to implement universal background checks or eliminate the gun show loophole to help prevent criminals and crazy people from buying weapons.

Editorial: New Zealand attacks unite government on gun control. America stands divided.

Acting as rationally as the New Zealand leaders after just one mass shooting would be far too much to hope for from Republicans — who continually receive campaign support from the NRA. It clearly demonstrates that Republicans care more about placating the NRA than taking action to protect Americans. Another reason to vote them out of office.

Fox was right to suspend Judge Jeanine

Letter to the editor:

President Donald Trump has criticized Fox News for suspending long-time host Jeanine Pirro from her show, “Justice With Judge Jeanine.” Pirro was reprimanded for her derogatory comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., for wearing a hijab, which Pirro considered to be un-American and against our country’s Constitution.

Talker: Tucker Carlson is another victim of the leftist mob

Trump’s remarks in support of Pirro are highly inappropriate. Especially due to the fact that it was only days after 50 Muslims were brutally slaughtered in New Zealand. Is there any doubt now that Trump supports white supremacists?

Women should be required to enlist

Letter to the editor:

As an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, and father of a wonderful daughter and son, I believe all men and women — who are otherwise eligible, given health, mental suitability, criminal record and other minimum requirements — should be required to register for Selective Service upon reaching their 18th birthday.

Editorial: Include women in Selective Service registration

Counterpoint: Marine veteran: There is no military need to draft women

If a draft was to ever be implemented again in our country — which is highly unlikely short of a global war — those inducted would serve in all military occupational specialties.

The United States military has opened up nearly all military specialties (officer and enlisted) to women, which was the right thing to do. Yet, we still only require men to register for selective service. This inconsistency no longer makes sense, and it sends the wrong signal to the young people of our nation.

Teach your kids hard work, honesty

Letter to the editor:

Want to help your kids get ahead in life? Teach good study habits throughout primary and high school years.

Related: My child needed to learn from disappointment; not bribery

Hire a tutor. Buy an SAT prep course. Demonstrate hard work. Be honest. Your kids will have the satisfaction of knowing they got into college on merit and hard work, not bribery. Imagine what they would think otherwise. “What a bummer, my parents don’t think I am smart enough or good enough on my own,” or, “Now that I’m in, how do I stay in?” This is just sad commentary on Hollywood/wealthy society.
