Republicans sweep contested Delaware County races

MUNCIE, Ind. — Tuesday proved to be a big night for Delaware County Republicans, who claimed victory in each contested race for county office.

The local GOP won three contested races for district seats on Delaware County Council.

In District 3, Matt Kantz unseated Mary Chambers, a veteran Democratic council member. The Republican won that race by 769 votes.

Daniel Flanagan won election to the District 1 seat, claiming more than 62 percent of votes cast in his race with Democrat Audie Barber.

In District 2, Republican incumbent Jane Lasater won re-election, also drawing more than 62 percent of votes over Democratic challenger Kristi Knapp.

Republican William Hughes, who previously served as the council's attorney, was unopposed in his pursuit of the District 2 seat.

Republican Rick Spangler won a second term as Delaware County clerk. His opponent was Democrat Michelle Harvey.

Gavin Greene — chief deputy for incumbent Delaware County Coroner Rick Howell, who didn't seek re-election — will be the county's new coroner. Greene won his race with Democrat Ryan Davis.

Delaware County Sheriff Tony Skinner won re-election, turning back a challenge from Democrat Dave Williams, a deputy.

Republican Judi Calhoun will succeed veteran Delaware Circuit Court 1 Judge Marianne Vorhees, who is retiring. Calhoun's Democratic opponent was Muncie City Court Judge Amanda Dunnuck.

Other Republicans claiming victory Tuesday in uncontested local races were Ed Carroll, who will become the county's auditor; Jan Smoot, elected as county recorder; veteran Assessor James Carmichael and Delaware County Commissioner Shannon Henry.

The only Democrat to claim victory in a countywide race was Eric Hoffman, unopposed in his bid for a second term as Delaware County prosecutor.
