'We have a reputation to maintain': Uncle Tony's in Cranston reopens after inspection

CRANSTON – Uncle Tony's Pizza & Pasta on Oaklawn Avenue reopened Friday following a reinspection of the restaurant by the state Department of Health, owner Edward A. Carosi said.

“I’ve been in business 53 years and something like this has never, never happened. We have satisfied tens of thousands of people," Carosi said Friday.

Why was the restaurant closed?

Health inspectors issued a report Wednesday detailing the presence of cockroaches and rodents, a dead rodent and an accumulation of rodent droppings throughout the establishment, as well as large amounts of rodenticide in open plastic containers.

The report said trapped cockroaches and rodents were observed on glue boards throughout the kitchen as well as a large bag of salt containing rodent urine and droppings.

Carosi said crews cleaned the establishment throughout the night. It was given a clean bill of health after a reinspection Friday morning, he said.

“We’ve been around so long because we’ve done an outstanding job,” said Carosi, who is known for his folksy radio advertisements. “We have a reputation to maintain. It disturbs me that that reputation might be besmirched.”
