Residents Brace for Stormy Days as Powerful Typhoon Lashes South Japan

Residents in Okinawa, Japan, were warned to be on high alert for “storms, high tides, and landslides” for three days, as Typhoon Khanun lashed the country’s southernmost islands on August 2.

Japan’s weather service said the storm was packing maximum sustained wind speeds of over 100 mph, and warned its impacts could be “prolonged.”

Japanese broadcaster NHK reported one man died after a garage collapsed due to strong winds, according to initial police information.

A further 41 people were injured and more than 200,000 people were without power, the outlet said.
