Residents take to the outdoors during Wednesday heat wave

From walking on the boardwalk to wading in the waves, residents and visitors took to the outdoors to enjoy the warm weather Wednesday.

Just as it was forecasted, Wednesday brought the heat to the region with a high of 93 expected in Port Huron.

At Thomas Edison Parkway, people could be seen walking along the St. Clair River either alone or with loved ones. Fishing gear was propped up against the railing as well.

Tim Massey decided to enjoy the weather a different way. Donned from head to toe in scuba gear, he wanted to try to see the sturgeon in the St. Clair River. He comes once or twice a week from Shelby Township to dive.

“It’s a nice dive,” Massey said. “There’s lots of visibility and the current is challenging.”

Capac resident Amanda Salisbury was out with three of her children Wednesday morning after dropping her other daughter off at school. Anytime they’re in the area, she said she likes to take her children by the water. Wednesday, they visited the Huron Lightship Museum.

“We always make a point to see the water because how lucky are we that we have all these beautiful things to enjoy,” Salisbury said.

At Lakeside Park, dozens of people were also enjoying the weather. Families were relaxing on the beach, some people were paddle-boarding and others ate lunch in the park. Denise Medrano took the chance to take her granddaughters to the splash pad in the park.

“This is where you should be one a hot day like today,” the St. Clair woman said.

Medrano said it was the first time she took her granddaughters to Lakeside Park.

Abdulaziz Alhanek came to Port Huron from Dearborn with a group of friends. They planned to barbeque, swim and play volleyball while there. He said he recently came back to Michigan from Qatar.

“I’m used to the heat, so I can’t complain,” Alhanek said. “I hope everyone gets outside. We have four seasons in Michigan, so go out and enjoy each one.”

Students from Thomas Edison Elementary School were also at Lakeside Park for a fieldtrip. For the past 24 years, the school hosts a trip to the park for fourth and fifth graders. They ate grilled hotdogs for lunch and played in the splashpad nearby.

“We here to have a good time,” Becky Kohanov, a teacher at Thomas Edison Elementary said. “We have a lot of parents here to help out, and we’re really lucky with that.”

The students also get to enjoy ice cream once they leave the park. Kohanov said this trip is a nice way to spend the last full day of school with the students.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory until 8 a.m. Thursday. There's a chance of scattered thunderstorms Thursday morning, with a high of 88.
