Restaurant closing, beer garden opens, best local Thai food and Mother’s Day restaurants

Here’s a roundup of the latest retail and restaurant activity in and around Whatcom County:

Heliotrope closing permanently

The Heliotrope restaurant in Glacier will permanently close on Monday, May 8, according to a Facebook post Monday.

“It has been a fantastic journey and we have really enjoyed sharing some of our favorite foods from around the world with you all. It has also been a very difficult one, taking a toll both mentally and physically on us,” the post states. No plans for the restaurant have been released.

The restaurant is located at 9990 Mt. Baker Highway in Glacier.

The Portal opens for the summer

The Portal, a metal shipping container village of local restaurants and retail shops reopened for the summer on Friday, May 5. Five local businesses, Kulshan Brewing Co., The Selkie Scoop ice cream shop, Dig Deep mountain bike rentals, Our Kitchen coffee and bakery, Rain or Shine Riviera Club restaurant and Sun-E-Land Bikes e-bike rentals will be operating throughout the summer.

The Kulshan Trackside Beer Garden is scheduled to open on Friday, June 25. It’ll be open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., with 20 beers on tap and a variety of food options nearby. The beer garden is in the Waterfront District near Waypoint Park.

The Portal is at 296 W Laurel St. in Bellingham, and each business has various operating hours that are updated online.

Bellingham tennis club celebrates 50 years

The Bellingham Training & Tennis Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, according to a news release from the business. The club has five indoor tennis courts, two workout gyms and an indoor cycle studio. To celebrate the anniversary the club is offering $50 off memberships during the month of May, and special events and activities throughout the year.

The club is open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and is at 800 McKenzie Ave. in Bellingham.

Boundary Bay Brewing Co. opens beer garden

Boundary Bay Brewing Co. reopened its beer garden for the summer on May 3. The beer garden is dog friendly and allows outside food to be brought in, as food service will only be available at Friday Fish Frys and select Saturday events.

Boundary Bay Brewing Co. is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and is at 1107 Railroad Ave. in Bellingham.

Special Mother’s Day restaurant offerings

Local restaurants are offering special Mother’s Day brunches and meals on Sunday, May 14 such as Skylark’s Cafe and Bellewood Farms. Some restaurants require reservations.

Whatcom’s best Thai food

A recent reader poll by The Bellingham Herald found the best Thai restaurant in Whatcom County, which is known for its spring rolls, glass noodle soup, Panang curry, pad thai, fried rice, yakisoba and Thai tea. The poll included nine local restaurant options.
