Restaurant inspections: Here's how IHOP, Crush, Beef Burger Barrel scored

The Food Establishment Inspection Report is a weekly report that appears Sundays. Information is taken from reports provided by the Environmental Health Department, and individual reports can be viewed at its website, https://amarillo.gov/departments/community-services/environmental-health/foodinspections. A numerical grading system is now being used, with a score of 100 points being equivalent to zero demerits.

  • 100 points – No major violation at the time of inspection

  • 85 points – Considered an average score

  • 70 points or below – Requires re-inspection within 24 hours

  • COS – Corrected on site during inspection

These points correspond to the following letter grades:

  • A – 90 to 100

  • B – 80 to 89

  • C – 70 to 79

  • F – 69 and below

These establishments received the following scores for being out of compliance as stated:

(B/84) Beef Burger Barrel, 3102 Plains Blvd. Raw ground beef patties stored on top of pans holding cut lettuce and tomatoes; food debris from previous day on knives; green chiles stored in open can beginning to rust. COS. Household pesticide on shelf behind freezer. Correct by 08/20. No soap at hand sink; heavy grease build-up throughout kitchen on walls, floor and ceiling; restroom door must be selfclosing. Correct by 08/28. Towels in rack under bread must be removed once they become dirty and should not be left several days; ceiling above three compartment sink beginning to fall apart; all wood for shelves above hand sink need to be painted or stained to be non-absorbent. Correct by 11/15.

(A/98) Chicken Express, 404 Tascosa Road. Large number of flies in establishment; dust on multiple walls and ceilings. Correct by 02/17/2024.

(A/90) Continental, 1300 S. Jackson St. Raw beef and bacon stored next to cooked turkey, milk and cooked chicken and dumplings; raw eggs stored next to cantaloupe (repeat violation). COS. Air gap under prep sink must have a visible gap between the entrance and exit pipes to prevent backflow. Correct by 08/31. All employee food and non-food items must be stored in a designated area; ice cream and jello stored without lids; old food debris and drippings on grill; multiple cutting boards deeply scored; dust on ceilings, fans in dish area and fan in walk-in #3; food debris on or around toaster and multiple handles (repeat violation). Correct by 11/21.

Two make tables not holding proper temperatures; sanitizing solution in dishwasher at improper concentration. Correct by 09/04. Cutting boards deeply scored (repeat violation); dust on ceilings and sides of equipment; hard water stains on outside of water spigot; old food debris on cooler door handles and shelving below service areas (repeat violation). Correct by 12/21.

(A/95) Dollar General Store #12249, 2726 S.W. 10th Ave. Several dented cans on shelves for sale. COS. Heavy dust accumulation on shelves (repeat violation); acoustic ceiling tiles in restroom must be changed to a non-absorbent material. Correct by 11/19.

(A/97) Eastridge Lanes Inc., 5405 E. Amarillo Blvd. Pickles at room temperature. COS.

(A/94) Hibachi Steak and Raman, 7701 W. I-40. Raw beef stored in same box as vegetables/spices (repeat violation); no paper towels at hand washing station (repeat violation). COS. Ceiling tile missing. Correct by 11/15.

(A/93) Houston Middle School, 815 S. Independence St. Heavily seam dented cans on shelves for use. COS. Temperature logs not kept for cold or hot holding equipment; weather strip needed along bottom and side of back door (repeat violation); pipes above mop sink with exposed fiberglass insulation. Correct by 11/19.

(A/93) IHOP, 2100 S. Western St. Strawberries stored under raw meat in walk-in cooler; build-up in bottom of ice scoop holder cup. COS. Two roaches in cabinet below coffee/salad bar prep area in front; flies in sitting areas and bathroom; multiple areas with dirt/dust accumulation and food debris (repeat violation); wall behind soda syrup boxes needs repairing. Correct by 11/15.

(A/98) Jimmy John’s, 2807 S. Western St. Ice scoop in bin with handle touching ice. COS. Scoop inside salt container with handle touching salt (repeat violation); pan filled with salt needs to be labeled. Correct by 11/16.

(A/96) KZ Discount, 2400 S.W. 46th Ave. Food handler certification needed. Correct by 08/28. Dead roach beside walk-in cooler; chipped floor tiles in employee restroom must be replaced (repeat violation); unfinished wood next to soda machine and above fans in walk-in cooler must be sealed to be non-absorbent (repeat violation). Correct by 11/16.

(A/95) La Mega Michoacana, 802 E. Amarillo Blvd., Space A. Jalapenos on table at room temperature; some food items without lids; mold on outside of bottle of juice; utensils for TCS (temperature/time controlled for safety) foods in water at room temperature. COS.

Correct by 09/04. Evidence of pests in kitchen; chipped/peeling paint on walls and cabinets throughout kitchen and on cabinet storing dry foods near mop sink; missing tile in mop sink room needs to be replaced; restroom door must be self-closing. Food stored on floor in back stock area (repeat violation); to-go items and single-use items stored on floor; totes holding sugar and other powders heavily soiled with flour and dry dough; grease spill behind grill area; acoustic ceiling tiles above main counter must be changed to a non-absorbent material.
