Restaurant inspections: Scores for Comfort Suites, Crackin' Crab, Denny's, more

The Food Establishment Inspection Report is a weekly report that appears Sundays. Information is taken from reports provided by the Environmental Health Department, and individual reports can be viewed at its website, http://amarillo.gov/departments/community-services/environmental-health/foodinspections. A numerical grading system is now being used, with a score of 100 points being equivalent to zero demerits.

  • 100 points – No major violation at the time of inspection

  • 85 points – Considered an average score

  • 70 points or below – Requires re-inspection within 24 hours

  • COS – Corrected on site during inspection

These points correspond to the following letter grades:

  • A – 90 to 100

  • B – 80 to 89

  • C – 70 to 79

  • F – 69 and below

These establishments received the following scores for being out of compliance as stated:

(A/98) Austin Middle School, 1808 Wimberly Road. Dust and debris on shelves in storage room near dishwashing three-compartment sink; exposed brick on window between serving line and kitchen must be sealed and dirt removed (repeat violation). Correct by 05/21. Paint beginning to chip off preparation tables; ceiling tiles missing or beginning to fall off, leaving glue on surface above (repeat violation) Correct by 08/12.

(A/97) Bonham Middle School, 5600 S.W. 49th Ave. Cut veggies in walk-in cooler without date marks. COS. Two bulbs out in vent hood need replacing; excess dust build-up on ceiling vents above food prep surfaces. Correct by 05/20.

(A/99) Canyon Intermediate School, 506 8th St., Canyon. Multiple light bulbs out in closets and dry storage areas. Correct by 05/21.

(A/99) Canyon Jr. High, 910 9th Ave., Canyon. Bathroom door propped open. COS.

(B/86) Comfort Suites, 12 Western Plaza Drive. Quaternary sanitizer dispenser needs servicing. COS. Sign needed at buffet advising customers that a clean plate is needed every visit through buffet line; allergens advisory sign needed at buffet line; sanitizer test kit needed; no paper towels in dispenser at hand sink. Correct by 02/26. Certified Food Manager must be present during all hours of operation; food handler certificates needed for all employees who handle food and equipment. Correct by 03/15. Establishment scorecard must be displayed near buffet bar in easily view of customers; CFM certificate must be posted in view of public; sign needed at kitchen hand sink instructing employees to wash hands before returning to work; food handler certificates must be maintained on premises. Correct by 05/6.

(B/86) Crackin’ Crab, 2207 S. Western St., Space 70. Used fish breading stored out of refrigerator at room temperature for unknown length of time. COS. Quaternary sanitizer not dispensing properly at three-compartment sink; shellstock tags in office did not state last date that product in each tagged container was served; must use an approved record keeping system that keeps tags in chronological order; quaternary sanitizer test strips expired; no chlorine sanitizer test strips; boxes of food stored directly on floor in walk-in cooler; spoon stored with handle contacting minced garlic in reach-in cooler; unlabeled bulk container of seasoning near fryers. Correct by 02/23. Leak on drain lines under three-compartment sink causing build-up under sink. Correct by 08/20.

(B/81) Denny’s Restaurant #6674, 1710 E. I-40. Hash browns on counter at improper temperature; raw shelled eggs in cooler near grill at improper temperature; items in walk-in cooler with expired date marks; employees touched clothing and did not wash hands before handling ready-to-eat foods; cell phone stored on packages of tortillas; scoops touching food. COS. Cover missing on cooler next to grill and not holding proper temperature; rust on outside of ice machine needs to be sealed; hand sink next to line draining slow and needs servicing; invoice for servicing of grease trap must be provided. Correct by 02/26. Soda nozzles and tops of spice containers need daily cleaning; mold on wall behind threecompartment sink needs cleaning; need to clean inside coolers, drawers storing ready-to-eat foods (biscuits), areas around hot holding units on line and areas storing single-use items or clean wares; build-up on vent hoods; broken tiles around mop sink need repairing; damaged ceiling in women’s restroom needs repairing. (A/91) Dollar General Store #11828, 7040 W. McCormick Road. Multiple dented cans on shelf for sale to consumers. COS. Hand sink in back room not easily accessible (repeat violation); paper towels and chemical stored in hand sink (repeat violation); door sweep still needed in back storage room (repeat violation); self-closer needed on east side door (repeat violation); bottom of coolers need cleaning; heavy mud build-up in mop sink; ceiling above three compartment sink needs to be replaced; lids still needed on sanitary trash cans in restrooms (repeat violation). Correct by 02/26.

(A/96) El Giro, 1800 Bell St. Items stacked wet; vents in vent hood damaged and need to be replaced; baseboards missing on wall next to grill; hand wash sign needed at sink in front. Correct by 05/16.

(A/99) Hillside Elementary, 9600 Perry Ave. Excess ice build-up on chest freezer storing ice cream; build-up on rinse sink faucet next to large ware washing machine; dust accumulating around ceiling vents above prep surfaces. Correct by 05/21.

(A/98) Humphreys Highland Elementary, 3901 S.E. 15th Ave. Stand-up refrigerator not maintaining proper temperature. Correct by 04/15.

(A/98) Mitch’s BBQ #699, 8507 E. I-40. Cooked ribs from commissary in walk-in cooler without date marks. COS.

(A/95) Reeves-Hinger Elementary, 1005 21st St., Canyon. No quaternary sanitizer test strips; two-compartment sink may not be used for ware washing operations (repeat violation); a three-compartment sink must be installed in kitchen (repeat violation). Correct by 03/02. Paint peeling and cracking on wall above washing machine; ceiling tile open above prep table needs to be put back in place. Correct by 05/21.

(A/96) Rockin Zebra Soda Shoppe, 404 15th St., Canyon. Chocolate and caramel syrups requiring refrigeration after opening, stored on counter at room temperature. COS. Water damaged ceiling tiles need to be replaced. Correct by 05/20.

(A/95) Sonic #8385, 14901 IH 27. Raw eggs and raw bacon stored above boxes of fully cooked chili; handles stored incorrectly in food containers. COS. Heavy accumulation of dust and dirt on fan above prep table. Correct by 05/21.

(A/97) South Georgia Elementary, 5018 Susan Drive. White powder debris on top of dispenser holding clean knives. COS.

(A/98) Taco Bell #035880, 2010 Ross Osage Drive. Invoice for servicing of grease trap must be provided. Correct by 02/26. Liquid (looks like water) very slow pooling around back exit door and near floor drain, possible leak, needs repairing. Correct by 05/16.

(A/94) Texas Steak Express, 2600 S. Kentucky St. Certified Food Manager must be present during all hours of operation. Correct by 03/01. Box of potatoes stored on floor next to drain near walk-in cooler. Correct by 05/20. Employee food in reach-in cooler above food for sale; dust and mold on shelves in walk-in cooler; some racks in walk-in cooler beginning to rust and need to be resurfaced or replaced; dust accumulating on exhaust vents; heavy dust accumulation on ice machine filter. Correct by 06/20.

(A/94) Toot ‘n Totum #88, 2441 S. Western St. Bottle of blue chemical hanging on clean dish rack; multiple toxic chemicals without labels. COS. Certified Food Manager certificate could not be provided; splash guard needed on hand sink or shelf to prevent splash contamination. Correct by 03/01.

(A/91) Toot ‘n Totum #93, 8772 S. Coulter St. Burger toppings at improper temperatures in cold hold unit. COS. Certified Food Manager must be present during all hours of operation. Correct by 02/26. Uncovered food in reach in coolers and freezers; dust on shelves throughout establishment above tea, coffee and slush dispensers (repeat violation); dust on fan guards in walk-in cooler; soda splatters in back preparation area on walls and ceiling. Correct by 05/16.

(A/97) Western Plateau Elementary, 4927 Shawnee Trail. Open package of deli meat out of date. COS. Hole in wall next to mop sink and coving separated from wall. Correct by 05/21.

(A/97) Windsor Elementary, 6700 Hyde Pkwy. Inside of ice machine soiled and machine damaged and rusting on outside. Correct by 02/26.
