Restaurant inspections: See how Rosas, King and I, El Tropico scored

The Food Establishment Inspection Report is a weekly report that appears Sundays. Information is taken from reports provided by the Environmental Health Department, and individual reports can be viewed at its website, http://amarillo.gov/departments/community-services/environmental-health/foodinspections. A numerical grading system is now being used, with a score of 100 points being equivalent to zero demerits.

  • 100 points – No major violation at the time of inspection

  • 85 points – Considered an average score

  • 70 points or below – Requires re-inspection within 24 hours

  • COS – Corrected on site during inspection

These points correspond to the following letter grades:

  • A – 90 to 100

  • B – 80 to 89

  • C – 70 to 79

  • F – 69 and below

(A/96) Braums Ice Cream #182, 1700 S. Western St. No towels at hand sink by ice machine. COS. Large amount of flies in kitchen area; food debris and trash under shelves and behind shake station (repeat violation). Correct by 12/20.

(A/95) Doll House, 4523 Canyon Drive. No towels at hand sink. COS. Dirt and dust accumulation on walk-in cooler fans (repeat violation); carpet under ice machine (repeat violation); ceiling in women’s bathroom need replacing (repeat violation); back flow prevention needed on ice machine drain pipe. Correct by 12/24.

(A/97) Gibbys, 4414 Willow St. Several TCS (temperature/time control for safety) foods inside cooler at improper temperature. Correct by 09/29

(A/96) Heights Discount & Café, 1621 N.W. 18th Ave. Acoustic ceiling tiles above soda dispensers, snow cone service area and in restroom must be replaced or sealed to be non-absorbent. Correct by 09/25. Excessive dust on fans; to go containers stored on floor; multiple cutting boards deeply scored; dust and old food debris on multiple equipment handles, microwave and walls. Correct by 02/24/2024.

(B/89) El Tropico, 1111 E. Amarillo Blvd, #C. Utensils not being properly washed, rinsed and sanitized; dishes must be air dried, not dried with towels; sanitizer in buckets too strong; all wet rags must be stored in sanitizer solution between uses. COS. Food with no prep dates; hand sink in front area not working; tape on gasket on ice machine. Correct by 10/02. Build-up behind guard on ice machine; scoops with handles touching products; scoops without handles. Correct by 12/20.

(A/92) KFC, 1510 Ross St. Containers of coleslaw in walk-in cooler without date marks. COS. Clean wares stored on rusted rack; soda nozzles dirty. Correct by 10/06. Rust on several ceiling vents; broken or missing floor and coving tiles by back exit door and throughout kitchen; coving separating from wall in middle walk-in cooler near door; Food Handler certification needed for each food employee. Correct by 12/26.

(A/95) Kimble Learning Center, 2200 S.E. 10th Ave. BBQ sauce and Teriyaki sauce requiring refrigeration after opening, stored on dry storage rack. COS. Dirty ceiling vents above prep stations in kitchen; acoustic ceiling tiles in employee restroom must be replaced or sealed to be smooth, durable, easily cleanable and non-absorbent; damaged wall near faucet of mop sink. Correct by 12/22.

(A/97) La Bella Pizza, 700 23rd St., Canyon. Employee washing hands in three-compartment sink. COS. Wet rags must be stored in sanitizer solution between uses. Correct by 03/20/2024.

(A/96) La Bella Pizzeria Hillside, 7230 Hillside Road. Sanitizer in three-compartment sink too strong. COS. All utensils being used as scoops must have a handle and stored so that handle does not come into contact with the food. Correct by 12/20.

(A/93) Pacific Rim, 2061 Paramount Blvd. Raw chicken stored above ready-to-eat food in reach-in cooler near door to kitchen. COS. Dates needed on items that will not be used within 24 hours. Correct by 10/02. Heavy grease build up on vent hood filters, light covers and fire suppression lines; food and grease on floor in several areas of the kitchen. Correct by 12/20.

(A/98) Panda Express #2033, 2416 S. Georgia St. Food debris from previous day in one of the cooler drawers in front of wok area. COS. Handle coming off of faucet in men’s restroom. Correct by 01/24/2024.

(A/98) Rain Premier Sushi Bar & Lounge, 817 S. Polk St. Employee items stored next to and above customer food products; multiple items without a lid or other covering. Correct by 01/13/2024.

(F/61) Rosas Café & Tortilla Factory #44, 6007 S. Soncy Road. Personal container of food stored in ice intended for customers. COS. Several containers of freshly cooked food covered in cellophane with condensation build-up; pull out coolers across from grills not maintaining proper temperature; scrambled eggs at improper temperature; several foods out of temperature and not being monitored for time; sanitizer in dishwasher too weak; no sanitizer in sanitizer buckets throughout kitchen; several heavily soiled food contact surfaces; no employees washing hands; several employees wore same gloves through different tasks or after handling items such as cell phones; one employee went outside and handled items before going back inside and touching utensils without washing hands and changing gloves; manager on duty does not have Food Manager or Food Handler certifications; all employees who handle food must have a Food Handler certification. Correct by 09/29. Hot water is not reaching proper temperature; no dates on any food in establishment; no sanitizing test strips; no paper towels at several hand washing stations; several hand sinks used for dumping. Correct by 12/21. This is a failed inspection.

Boxes of food stored on floor in walk-in cooler and freezer (repeat violation); fish thawing in unopened reduced oxygen packaging (repeat violation); containers stacked wet; top of the dishwasher and a few other areas in need of cleaning. Correct by 12/20.

(A/98) Sonic Drive In, 1009 E. Amarillo Blvd. Ice scoop on soda drain rack. COS. Dust accumulation on ceiling by vents and light covers. Correct by 12/20.

(A/99) Spotted Pony, 2042 Paramount Blvd. Sealed door at back of cooler exposing spray foam insulation; walls and ceiling at bar need to be sealed to be non-absorbent. Correct by 12/20.

(A/98) Subway #25610, 2001 S. Western St. Grease trap manifest or invoice must be provided. Correct by 10/02. Light fixture covers missing. Correct by 03/20/2024.

(A/95) Taco Bell #032693, 3309 S. Washington St. Heavy mold and soil accumulation on nozzle diffusers of soda machine in lobby. COS. Lid open to grease bin; spill under freeze machine and onto floor on customer side of counter. Correct by 03/19/2024.

(A/91) Texas Firehouse Sport Bar & Grill, 2222 S. Coulter St, D1A. Personal drinks in cooler by grill unlabeled and not stored properly; queso buckets stored on floor of beer cooler (repeat violation); scoop handles stored improperly (repeat violation). COS. No towels at hand washing stations. Correct by 10/01. No quaternary sanitizer test strips. Correct by 10/02. Dirt and debris build-up on and in vents, shelves and lids (repeat violation); light bulb shield broken in walk-in cooler. Correct by 12/20.

(C/71) The King & I, 104 15th St., Canyon. Raw head of lettuce stored in direct contact with rusty shelf in walk-in cooler; food stored on floor in walk-in cooler and in dry storage area. COS. TCS foods stored in a non-working make table; bin of cream cheese won tons sitting out at room temperature; bin of cut veggies sitting at room temperature at sushi bar; moldy canned food in walk-in cooler; bin of thawing raw chicken stored on top of canned pineapple; Half & Half and pitcher of tea stored in ice intended for customers; old meat juices and clumps in old batter bins of flour and panko crumbs; heavy build-up of old food and dust on small toaster for shrimp tempura; employee medicine stored with condiments; no records kept on sushi pH. Correct by 09/25. Establishment does not have a date marking system; two coolers not working; plastic grocery bags used to store raw vegetables; rodent feces in dry storage area next to bags of rice; personal dental products stored next to condiments; personal pineapple cut and stored on food prep surface; knives and tongs stored under three-compartment sink; plastic cup stored in sugar bin; build-up of dust, dirt, food residue and other debris in multiple areas of establishment; multiple personal items scattered about kitchen. Correct by 10/02. Food stored intermixed with maintenance tools; hand sink in women’s restroom leaking; household cooler and freezer used for customer food. Correct by 12/20.

(A/99) Toot ‘n Totum #77, 421 Tascosa Road. Floor tiles missing behind soda machine. Correct by 12/20. Ceiling tiles in front of and directly above soda machine must be replaced with non-absorbent tiles. Correct by 09/21/2024.

(A/98) Wesleys Bean Pot LLC, 6406 River Road. Old food debris in ice build-up in deep freezers and handles/outsides of coolers outside; household equipment being used to cook/keep food warm in restaurant. Correct by 03/26/2024.
