Years after a proposed Oak Street restaurant was met with resistance from Riverside residents, could The Roost finally have found a new home in the historic neighborhood?

According to plans submitted to JEA this week, a new restaurant referred to as “Lomax Street Restaurant” is slated for the former Wells Fargo bank branch building at Lomax and Oak streets in Five Points.

The restaurant, comprised of the existing 2,100-square-foot building and a planned 4,100-square-foot addition, is proposed by Roost Restaurants, LLC, incorporated in 2015 when restaurant developers Ted Stein and J.C. Demetree first proposed The Roost at the former Deluxe Laundry and Dry Cleaners in the 2200 block of Oak St. (A building permit under review by the city lists the size of the new Lomax Street restaurant at 7,540 square feet.)

Neither Stein nor Demetree responded to Times-Union messages seeking comment.

Although The Roost never took root in Riverside, Stein and Demetree went on to open two locations of The Local, a restaurant concept – as its name suggests – of a neighborhood spot to gather for good food, booze and caffeine and a place to enjoy it all with friends. The restaurant debuted in 2017 at 4578 San Jose Blvd. in Miramar. A second location opened in 2019 at 301 Atlantic Blvd. in Neptune Beach.

Then in early 2021, Stein and Demetree launched Wonderbird, a fast-food restaurant in Jacksonville Beach based on the popular chicken sandwich from The Local menu.

In Five Points, the next concept from Roost Restaurants will join neighboring Odessa Slava, Taqueria Cinco, the recently opened Homepsun Kitchen and more than 15 others in what has become one of Jacksonville’s dining destinations over the last decade.

Roost Restaurants, LLC in October 2021 signed a 10-year lease with building owner City Limits LLC of Georgia, according to additional documents submitted to JEA.
