This restaurant and secret speakeasy from Mexico is opening its first U.S. spot in Miami

Its name may invoke whiskey, but the newest restaurant on Calle Ocho is about all things Mexican (including mezcal and tequila served in a separate and secret bar).

Whiskylucan, a concept that was created in 2019 in Mexico with locations in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche and Merida Yucatan, has opened its first U.S. restaurant in Little Havana.

Co-founder Luis Augusto Garcia said that the brand plans to open more restaurants in Florida and around the country.

“The expansion into Little Havana marks the first milestone of our growth as we continue to share the rich culinary heritage of Mexico with food enthusiasts worldwide,” he said.

The restaurant’s menu will include just about everything you’d expect: Appetizers like Mexican corn, guacamole and guava and cheese tequenos. Main courses include tacos, tostadas, flautas, tortas. Whiskylucan even serves Venezuelan-style arepas.

The bar will also serve more than 40 mezcals plus cocktails like margaritas (naturally) and Micheladas. There are other craft cocktails as well: La Munequita, made with mezcal, strawberry, prosecco and guava pulp, or the Mero Mayamero with tequila blanco, Red Bull, lime juice and blue Curacao.

If the atmosphere you’re looking for is a little louder and wilder and stays up later, you will want to hit the secret Mexican speakeasy, Shotmilco, which is open only three nights a week. OK, it’s not exactly secret — it’s right across the hall. And while you can order food there as well from the Whiskylucan menu, there’s a special cocktail menu, bottle service and a shots bar that includes drinks like the Electric Lemonade, La Chilindrina, El Trago del Ocho and Dona Florinda.

Expect dancing into the wee hours, too.
