New restaurant serving Japanese hot pot is opening in downtown Sacramento. What to expect

A new restaurant serving up authentic Japanese hot pot cuisine will open its doors in downtown Sacramento this spring.

After months of construction, Shabu Shack is expected to open at 609 Capitol Mall in April, owner Richard Quang said.

The restaurant is located on the ground floor of The Frederic apartment building. It faces the Golden 1 Center on L Street.

“We chose downtown (Sacramento) to try and help revitalize the community which was heavily affected by the pandemic,” Quang said. “We wanted to bring a new exciting hot pot concept to the (Sacramento) community especially since there aren’t many hot pot options in the area.”

Shabu Shack also has locations in South Francisco and Elk Grove, which Quang owns.

According to its website, there will be another Shabu Shack opening in the Sacramento Valley region soon — at 500 First St., Suite 15, in Davis.

What can diners expect at new downtown Sacramento restaurant?

The downtown location will be Shabu Shack’s new flagship restaurant, Quang said.

He said the restaurant, with roughly 4,500 square feet of space, will have a VIP dining room that can hold 24 people or more and a patio area where diners can watch Sacramento Kings games on game days.

What’s on the menu at Shabu Shack?

Shabu Shack offers a handful of broths for cooking in a hot pot, including spicy Sichuan, miso and traditional kombu.

Customers can choose which type of entree they’d like to cook in the broth, from American-raised Kobe beef, Angus beef and A5 wagyu beef to vegetarian options.

Prices are based on the entree and size, and start at $19.

There are also appetizers and sake, beer, flavored soju and cocktails.

The downtown Shabu Shack will have an expanded menu, Quang said, including new drinks, more appetizers and cooked entrees.

“Our goal is to become the hot pot destination for all of Sacramento whether you’re in town for an event at the Golden 1 or a local wanting to enjoy a delicious meal,” Quang said.

Where can I find Shabu Shack locations?

Shabu Shack currently has two Northern California locations:

  • 7419 Laguna Blvd, No. 220, in Elk Grove

  • 200 Grand Ave. in South San Francisco
