New restaurants coming to four of the six Kansas Turnpike service areas

New restaurants are coming to four of the six service areas on the Kansas Turnpike, and that means some others are going away.

At the Towanda service station, which is at mile marker 65, Hardee’s and Dunkin’ are closing and Subway and Dairy Queen are opening.

Those two businesses also are opening at the Matfield Green service station, which is mile marker 97. That means Hardee’s and Dunkin’ are closing there.

At the Topeka service station, which is at mile marker 188, a McDonald’s is going to replace what has been a multirestaurant facility with Hardee’s, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Dunkin’.

The existing restaurants are closing at 11 p.m. on April 14 so the spaces can be remodeled.

Tentative opening dates for the new restaurants are as follows:

The drive-throughs at the Towanda and Matfield Green Subways and Dairy Queens will open in late June, and the dine-in areas should be ready in mid-July.

The McDonald’s drive-through at the Topeka service area will open in mid-August, and the dine-in area will be ready in early September.

There’s already remodeling happening at the Emporia service area, which is mile marker 132, where McDonald’s closed this month.

Drive-throughs for a new Subway and Taco John’s will open in mid-May, and the dine-in areas will be ready in early June.

The convenience stores within each service area will add more food to their offerings while the remodeling takes place.

In a statement, Kansas Turnpike Authority CEO Steve Hewitt said it’s important to KTA to provide “solid traveler services.”

“Thanks to feedback provided by customers, we have a better understanding of their expectations which helps when selecting quality partners.”
