Restaurants gear up as restrictions ease

May 8—After a tough year for local businesses due to the pandemic, the reversal of many coronavirus restrictions this month may prove to be a welcomed relief. Windham Director of Economic Development Jim Bellano said changes to coronavirus regulations went into effect May 1 and more will happen May 19.

Bellano said the May 1 changes mostly affected restaurants with outdoor seating, while the May 19 changes will mostly affect indoor restaurants and businesses.

On May 1, outdoor bars that do not serve food reopened and outdoor standing bar service was allowed.

In addition, tables no longer are limited to an eight- person capacity.

On May 19, all remaining restrictions will be lifted, except masks will continue to be required in all indoor public settings where social distancing is not possible.

These include indoor restaurant occupancy restrictions and other indoor businesses like barbers and nail salons.

Bellano said many Windham and Willimantic businesses are looking forward to the May 19 changes, as the May 1 revisions still require good weather to work.

This week's rainy weather has showed the limitations of the first round of lifted restrictions.

"As you look at this week, outdoor dining has been washed out," Bellano said. " The May 19 date is exceptionally important."

Restaurants in particular have had a stressful year.
