Restaurants, hotel in Wichita KS fail over grease & grime, black mold, no soap & more

Five restaurants and a hotel in Sedgwick County were out of compliance during food safety and lodging inspections conducted by the Kansas Department of Agriculture last week.

Information about the establishments and a summary of their violations appears below. This list includes inspections from Oct. 8-14 and was compiled on Oct. 18. There were no non-compliant inspections in Sedgwick County from Oct. 1-7.

The more than 110 establishments that passed inspections over the past two weeks also appear below.

How establishments fail

Most violations are minor and are corrected during an inspection.

Businesses fall out of compliance when they have too many violations, issues that can cause foodborne illnesses or when a problem can’t be fixed right away, like bug and rodent infestations. Typically, failed establishments are re-inspected within 10 days.

It’s rare for a facility to shut down over a failed inspection, but it can happen. Circumstances include sewage backups, pest problems, or operating without water, power or refrigeration. Usually, closures are temporary.

Out-of-compliance inspections

Carlos O’Kelly’s, 527 S. Ridge Road in Wichita — Four violations on Oct. 9 during a complaint inspection. No test strips for sanitizer available, containers of milk and whipped cream weren’t labeled with opening dates, no soap at hand-washing sink, bottles of chemicals weren’t labeled with contents. Next inspection: Oct. 19.

Pizza Hut, 1708 E. Pawnee in Wichita — Two violations on Oct. 9 during a follow-up inspection. Greasy and grimy conditions that create potential food source for cockroaches, black mold under sink, dozens of metal containers “with a greasy food residue.” Next inspection: Dec. 9.

Quality Suites, 658 S. Westdale Drive in Wichita — One violation on Oct. 9 during a follow-up inspection. Cooler in kitchen wasn’t working properly which caused yogurt cups to be too warm. Next inspection: Nov. 30.

Smoothie King, 1861 E. Madison, Suite 600 in Derby — Four violations on Oct. 11 during a routine inspection. Hand-washing sink was blocked by door and trash can, no paper towels at hand-washing sink, leaky mop sink plus plumbing issue, no soap at hand-washing sink. Next inspection: Oct. 21.

Thai Village House of Pad Thai, 2020 S. Rock Road in Wichita — Eight violations on Oct. 11 during a complaint inspection. No test strips for sanitizer available, hand pump soap bottle didn’t work because it “was corroded shut,” build-up of grease on metal hood above grill, medication bottles and other items including stick of deodorant and cigarettes were stored among food, greasy walls, several foods including raw chicken and cooked egg rolls weren’t stored at required temperatures, the restaurant had bottles of hand-washing soap by sinks not designated for hand-washing. Next inspection: Oct. 21.

Wendy’s, 6404 W. Kellogg Drive in Wichita — Two violations on Oct. 11 during a follow-up inspection. Leaky faucet on kitchen hand-washing sink, restaurant didn’t label foods left at room temperature with the time they were taken out of refrigeration. Next inspection: Dec. 11.
