Restaurants, motel, store in Wichita fail checks over roaches, bed bugs, mice & more

Four restaurants, a motel and a dollar store in Wichita were out of compliance during Kansas Department of Agriculture food safety and lodging inspections conducted Aug. 13-19.

Information about the six Sedgwick County businesses and their violations appears below in an alphabetical list with a summary of the problems inspectors found. More details are posted in The Eagle’s searchable database of non-compliant restaurant and hotel inspections at www.kansas.com/databases. This list was compiled Aug. 23.

More than 60 establishments passed inspections with few or no violations last week. Those appear alphabetically below. Some may have been on a prior non-compliant list.

How establishments fail

Most violations are minor and are corrected during an inspection.

Businesses fall out of compliance when they have too many violations, issues that can cause foodborne illnesses or when a problem can’t be fixed right away, like bug and rodent infestations.

It’s rare for an establishment to shut down over a failed inspection, but it can happen. Circumstances that can lead to a closure include sewage backups, ongoing or untreated pest problems, and if a business operates without water, power or refrigeration. Usually closures are temporary.

When an establishment fails, it’s typically inspected again within 10 days.

Out-of-compliance inspections

Afton Motel, 855 S. Broadway in Wichita — Five violations on Aug. 16 during a modified complaint inspection. Cited for not having records showing the carbon monoxide detector in the laundry room had been checked every six months, no single-use gloves in laundry room, roaches and bed bugs that were “too many to count” in some rooms and some rooms that the inspector couldn’t enter because “roaches were on the doors and the door frames and were falling from the ceiling,” hand-washing sink in laundry room was disconnected and didn’t work, three fire extinguishers hadn’t been inspected since 2020. Next inspection: Aug. 31.

Champs 316 Bar & Grill, 1106 S. Seneca in Wichita — Three violations on Aug. 16 during a routine inspection. Cited because the water at the bathroom hand-washing sinks didn’t get hot enough, no backflow preventer on mop sink closet faucet, trash cans in women’s bathroom didn’t have lids. Next inspection: Aug. 26.

Family Dollar, 355 W. 21st St. in Wichita — One violation on Aug. 15 during a reopening inspection. Cited over mice. Inspector saw dead mice in traps in dry storage and fresh mouse droppings along baseboard of storage area and in mop sink. Next inspection: Aug. 25.

Magnolia Cafe, 2424 N. Woodlawn, Suite 111 in Wichita — Four violations on Aug. 15 during a routine inspection. Cited because bottles of sanitizer weren’t labeled with contents, restaurant didn’t save dealer tags from raw oysters, no paper towels in employee bathroom or at bar hand-washing sink, refrigerated meats and pasta sauce weren’t kept cold enough. Next inspection: Aug. 25.

Mexico Viejo Mexican Restaurant, 6960 W. 21st St. in Wichita — Eleven violations on Aug. 17 during a routine inspection. Cited for storing raw items including chicken and eggs above ready-to-eat foods in refrigeration, raw chicken was stored above raw beef in cooler, no test strips to measure concentration of chlorine sanitizer, milk wasn’t labeled with carton opening date, “about 50 mouse droppings on the shelf where tortillas are stored” and hundreds more on floors and in janitor’s closet, pans of cooked pork didn’t cool off quickly enough in refrigeration, containers of queso weren’t labeled with preparation dates, large hole in janitor’s closet wall, chipped and cracked spatulas, fly tape strips were hanging above tables where refried beans were cooling. Next inspection: Oct. 17.

Spangles, 1138 W. Pawnee in Wichita — Two violations on Aug. 15 during a complaint inspection. Cited because several foods including philly steak mix and chicken strips weren’t cold enough in refrigeration, individually portioned gravy containers weren’t labeled with preparation date. Next inspection: Aug. 25.
