Gulliver Prep baseball standout Luca Mendez is the Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Mendez, a senior, threw six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out four, and hit a key double, which led to the Raiders’ only runs in a 2-0 win over Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian in the Region 4-3A final. Mendez also had a two-run single in Gulliver’s heartbreaking 5-4 loss at state to North Broward Prep.

On the season, Mendez pitched to a 2.53 ERA with 39 strikeouts against 23 walks in 52 2/3 innings. He also hit .344, tied for the team lead with 24 RBI and had five home runs, nine doubles and 18 runs scored.

Miami Sunset baseball’s Johan Hidalgo, Doral Academy softball’s Sara Breaux, Southwest boys’ volleyball’s Juanmarco Diaz, Southridge girls’ track and field’s Cynteria James and Northwestern girls’ track and field’s Shakynah Tresvant rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
