Retail, restaurants expanding in Manchester

Nov. 16—MANCHESTER — Local and international companies are planning to expand to new locations in Manchester on opposite sides of town.

The owners of Randy's Wooster Street Pizza Shop have filed a number of permit applications to occupy a space at 285 East Center St. The restaurant would take up space vacated by the former Key Bank, in a building that also contains the Samadhi Yoga Studio on the corner of Lenox Street.

The restaurant has a location at 1000 Tolland Turnpike in Manchester near BJ's Wholesale Club and runs a takeout site in Hartford's Parkville Market.

When called this week, Staci Serrao, owner of Wooster Street Pizza, said the restaurant is not yet ready to share its plans for the new space.

It's not the only change coming to the plaza across from Nate Agostinelli Veterans Memorial Park, formerly known as Munro Park, where the Korean War memorials stand.

A Dollar Tree store also plans to move into the plaza, with permits lined up for a unit in the strip mall building next door at 297 East Center St.

The company is looking to occupy a roughly 11,000-square-foot unit, the former location of the Lenox Pharmacy and DME Uniforms store.

Dollar Tree was issued a permit last week to modify the unit to fit its needs and is seeking a permit for signage.

Dollar Tree operates stores in Manchester on Middle Turnpike and Pleasant Valley Road. Family Dollar, a brand owned by Dollar Tree, has a store on Broad Street.

Chief Building Inspector Greg Smith said there was no specific information on when the new Dollar Tree store would open.

Meanwhile, across town, developers are seeking approval to open a new Starbucks coffee shop in the ShopRite plaza at 210 Spencer St., on the corner of Hillstown Road.

The applicant, Basser-Kaufman 216 LLC, is seeking a special exception permit to build a roughly 2,400 square-foot shop with a drive-thru.

An existing Starbucks store is across the street from the plaza at 185 Spencer St.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the developer's application Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Center.

The PZC also will hold a public hearing on a special exception permit sought by Volta Charging LLC to install 10 electric vehicle charging stations at the Buckland Hills mall.

Also at the mall, Smith said, two clothing store chains, Bob's Stores and Eastern Mountain Sports, will be moving into the former Dick's Sporting Goods location at 179 Pavilions Drive, one of the Buckland Hills mall's "anchor" storefronts.

Smith said Bob's Stores is hoping to move into the space before the holidays, and Eastern Mountain Sports will be submitting its permits after the holidays.

Smith said the stores did not provide any specific information on how the retail space would be divided between the two.
