Retired Fairview police chief's 12th annual run to 9/11 memorial to benefit Maui victims

RIDGEWOOD — This time, Frank DelVecchio ran for Maui.

The resident's 12th annual Run for Hope Foundation 9/11 memorial run on Saturday honored first responders lost in the World Trade Center attacks. But this year, the 26-mile run to the World Trade Center was the first of two events sponsored by the foundation to raise funds for Maui fire victims.

"Next Saturday, for the first time, my sons Christopher and Aaron will go with me to the Grand Canyon and complete a 26-mile rim-to-rim hike," DelVecchio said. "All proceeds from both events will go to support first responders and the victims of the devastating fire in Maui."

DelVecchio conceded he did the last 10 miles of this year's World Trade Center journey on bicycle, finishing by 11 a.m.

"My back was getting to me," he said. "And it was warm. Last year it rained, which kept things cooler."

It is not DelVecchio's first run this year. In May, the retired Fairview police chief completed a three-day, 200-mile run from High Point State Park to Cape May in partnership with the Ridgewood YMCA for an Action to Fight Hunger and Food Insecurity campaign to benefit local pantries and youth programs across New Jersey.

The foundation has allowed DelVecchio to use his ongoing weight-loss exercise regimen to raise over $250,000 to benefit a wide variety of causes.

Past beneficiaries have included Tuesday's Children, Spring House, Ridgecrest Senior Housing, Semper Fi Fund, Adopt-A-Soldier, Jersey City Detective Seals Fund, Franciscan CDC of Fairview, Bergen County Homeless Shelter, Victims of Hurricane Sandy, Little Ferry PAL, Hurricane Relief for Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, Covenant House of New Jersey, Eva's Village, and Street2Street.

Donations can be made on the foundation's website, runforhopefoundation.org.
