Revitalize the law John Lewis risked his life for -Obama

In December, Lewis and his fellow Democrats in the House of Representatives passed the Voting Rights Advancement Act, a measure that would restore protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act against racial discrimination, which were struck down by the Supreme Court 2013.

Obama on Thursday suggested ending the use of the Senate filibuster if needed, as the legislation has stalled in the Republican-controlled chamber.

"If all this takes eliminating the filibuster, another Jim Crow relic, in order to secure the God-given rights of every American, then that’s what we should do," Obama said.

Obama made the remarks during his eulogy for Lewis, who died on July 17 at age 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also spoke at the funeral on Thursday in Atlanta, Georgia.
