New England Revolution head coach Bruce Arena has been placed on administrative leave while Major League Soccer conducts an investigation into allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate” remarks, the team announced Tuesday.

“The organization takes any allegations of workplace misconduct extremely seriously and is working closely with the League and fully cooperating with its investigation,” the Revolution said in a statement.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged remarks weren’t immediately clear.

Arena, 71, took over as coach of the soccer club in 2019. He previously coached the United States men’s national team at the World Cup in 2002 and 2006.

The Athletic reported that technical director Curt Onalfo and assistant coach Richie Williams will lead the Revolution in Arena’s absence.
