Reynolds wrestling captures 5th straight PIAA team title

Mar. 28—The Reynolds High wrestling team captured its fifth straight (8th overall) PIAA team championshp on Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.

Coach Casey Taylor's Raiders beat Burrell, 35-30, in the Class 2A semifinals and then defeated Southern Columbia, 31-22, in the championship match.

The Reynolds matmen became the first athletic program in District 10 history to win five straight PIAA Tournament championships.

In the semifinal win against Burrell (started at 132 pounds), the Buccaneers won the first 3 matches. Kaeden Berger grabbed Reynolds' first win with a tech fall at 152 pounds and then Jalen Wagner won by fall at 160.

Cole Toy posted a pin at 189 for the Raiders. Burell forfeited at 285 and 113. Reynolds' 2-time individual state champ Gary Steen then won by fall at 120 pounds.

In the championship match (started at 138), Southern Columbia led 22-3 before the Raiders tied the match at 22-all with a 9-1 major decision by Chase Bell at 113 pounds.

The Tigers opened the match with 3 wins before Berger won at 160 pounds with a 4-3 (TB) decision. Gavin Garcia and Wes Barnes then picked up wins for SC at 170 and 189 pounds.

Those were the last wins Southern Columbia would earn as the Raiders closed out the match with 7 wins.

Cole Toy won by decision at 215, Rocco John-Daniello posted a pin at heavyweight, Logan Hammerschmidt won by fall at 106, Bell picked up the major decision at 113, Liam Foore and Steen won by decision at 120 and 126 and Kane Kettering closed out the match with a decision at 132 pounds.

Steen closed out his high school career with a 168-9 record and will wrestle at Penn State. The senior class captured 4 District 10 championships, 4 PIAA team titles and went 83-2 in dual meets.
