RG&E to install 26K smart meters in Rochester region. Here's where

The Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. has announced that it will install 26,000 smart electric meters in its Sodus division, which includes Wayne and Cayuga counties.

The utility company is inviting residents, business owners and municipal officials to attend one of two open houses to learn more about the upcoming installations, the scope of the work, timeline and customer benefits.

The open houses will feature informational displays and representatives from RG&E who will be able to answer questions. The two open houses will be held at the following:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 21 - 5 to 7 p.m. at the Sodus Community Library, 17 Maple Ave., Sodus.

  • Thursday, March 2 -5 to 7 p.m. at Leavenworth Middle School, 5751 New Hartford St., Wolcott.

Registration is not required.

This installation of the smart meters, which are expected to be completed in July, is the first of its kind for the company within the Rochester region, said company spokeswoman Shelby Cohen. RG&E's parent company Avangrid already has a pilot smart meter program underway in Ithaca, where installation of smart meters started last fall.

Individual meters will be upgraded along existing meter reading routes as part of the smart meter installation process. Customers are to receive information about their installation about two weeks before installations begin in their neighborhood, according to RG&E officials.

A timeline for the rollout in the rest of the Rochester region was not set, but is expected to occur between 2023 and 2025, Cohen said.

The goal is to drastically reduce estimated billing, according to company officials.

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter is an electronic device that will be attached to the wall of your basement or the exterior of your house just like the meter you have now. But unlike the old electro-mechanical meters, which measure usage by counting the revolutions of little disks, these new meters use microprocessors to track your energy use.
