RHAM prevails at Yates Invite

Jan. 9—LEBANON — RHAM had three individual champions and six wrestlers reach the championship round to win the Casey Yates Invitational on Saturday at Lyman Memorial High School.

Michael Guerriero (120 pounds) had the fastest fall of the title round — winning in 23 seconds — for the Raptors, who finished with 196 points to edge Killingly (186) for the team title.

Ben Fournier (106) pinned his opponent in 51 seconds while Jeremy Devine (152) decisioned Haddam Killingworth's Cavin Napoletano 7-3.

Landon Roy (113), Gavin Plourde (132) and Michael Marques (182) all placed second while Brody Magnanini (182) took third.

Windham finished fourth overall (139.5 points) with three first-place finishes.

Despard Delmazio (113) earned a 11-0 major decision over RHAM's Landon Roy and Malachi Fowler (195) edged Killingly's Soren Rief by a 4-2 decision. Yael Garcia-Rodriguez (220) won by pinfall for the Whips while Gabriel Garcia (120) took third place.

Lyman Memorial/ Windham Tech finished sixth (116.5 points) with Nehemiah Czelusniak winning at 132 pounds with a 15-0 technical fall victory.

Timothy Breault (285) took third and Vincent Gauvin (195) was fourth for the Bulldogs.

E. O. Smith's Caleb Phillips was second at 126 pounds as the Panthers finished 14th (42 points) while Coventry finished 16th ( 34 points) with Naveen Rodriguez placing fourth at 132 pounds.

HOCKEY

Louis Bourquin looped a shot over Newtown goalie Christopher Ligouri for the lone goal of the afternoon — 3:15 into the third period — as E.O. Smith/Tolland recorded a 1- 0 non- conference victory at the University of Connecticut's Freitas Ice Forum.

Declan Bayne and Carter Pelletier assisted on the goal for the Bucks (3-4). Teagan Mabrysmith made 18 saves in goal with the biggest save coming on a one-timer off the stick of Camryn Gouveia with five minutes remaining to earn her first shutout.

Also, the Newtown and UConn police departments played a charity hockey game between periods in conjuction with Newtown police sergeant Will Champman — a 2001 E.O. Smith graduate. The two teams helped raise over $11,000 for Special Olympics.

Alex Stoner scored for Northeastern in a 2- 1 Central Connecticut Conference South Division loss to Rocky Hill at the Bolton Ice Palace.

Lucas Gorcenski and Shane Pourmaleki assisted on Stoner's goal for the Shamrocks ( 1- 5, 1- 3 league).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Killingly ( 6- 2) pulled away in the second half for a 49-32 ECC inter-division victory over Windham (5-2).

Anaka Eaton recorded a double- double with 23 points and 23 rebounds and Coventry built a commanding 42- 16 lead on Friday night in its 67-51 North Central Connecticut Conference victory over Hartford Sports and Medical Sciences in Hartford.

Charlotte Jordan led all scorers with 24 points and had five steals for the Patriots (7-3, 2-1 league). Jianna Foran added 10 points and five steals.

E. O. Smith ( 7- 2) outscored Berlin (3-5) 18-1 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 55- 30 CCC inter- division victory in Storrs.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Travis Mangual led all scorers with 27 points as Windham edged Waterford, 70-63, in an ECC Division II game on Friday.

Julian Cruz finished with 16 points and five steals and Anthony Green had 11 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Whips (6-2, 3-0 league), who led 32-30 at halftime and 46-44 after three quarters.
