RI Department of Health has advice on Washington Bridge for pregnant women in East Bay

Pregnant women in the East Bay should take an ambulance if they need to get to a medical facility west of the Washington Bridge in a hurry, the Rhode Island Department of Health advised Wednesday.

The Health Department made the advisory because the westbound side of the bridge was closed to regular traffic late Monday after an engineer discovered broken pins that could lead to a bridge collapse. Ambulances, however, are allowed to cross the westbound side of the bridge.

The Health Department recommends that women in labor call 911 for an ambulance after consulting with their healthcare professional, the department said in a message in both English and Spanish.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation this weekend expects to open two lanes of travel on the eastbound side of the bridge to westbound traffic, the DOT said Wednesday.
