Will RI ever allow a digital license in Apple Wallet instead of a hard copy? | Ask the DMV

Q: Will Rhode Island ever allow a digital license in Apple Wallet in place of the laminated hard copy in our wallets? I see that four states are now on the list and another 20 are seriously looking into it or are expected to implement it within the next year.

A: The states (issuing authorities) that do offer mobile identification also require the carrying of your physical identification. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is piloting with these states at their main airports, and then there are some local retailers (relying parties) in those states that have also jumped on board. It doesn’t do a mobile identification user any good to have this product if there is no relying party on the other end to receive or accept mobile identification.

The technology and hardware are still relatively new, and each needs more time to be refined to make it beneficial for all the parties involved.

Apple is not the only company out there that offers mobile identification in their wallets. Google and Samsung have versions, and many industry vendors offer the same application.
