RI Health Department recommends reopening 6 beaches to swimming

PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Department of Health on Saturday recommended reopening several beaches for swimming because bacteria counts had returned to safe levels. Those beaches are:

  • Scarborough North, in Narragansett

  • Goddard Park, in Warwick

  • Kent County YMCA, in Warwick

  • Sandy Point, in Portsmouth

  • Warren Town Beach, in Warren

  • Kingston’s Camp, in South Kingstown

Two other beaches that were closed Thursday remained closed as of Saturday: Oakland Beach, in Warwick; and Sandy Point Beach, in Portsmouth.

The state Department of Health recommended reopening Warren Town Beach to swimming on Saturday after determining that bacteria in the water had returned to safe levels.

The status of a beach may change as new data becomes available. The most up-to-date beach information is available through a recorded message on the Department of Health’s beaches telephone line: (401) 222-2751.

The Health Department will continue to monitor beach water quality through Labor Day.

As of Friday morning, closing recommendations at Ginny-B Campground in Foster on June 28 had not been lifted.

Meanwhile, the Health Department recommended reopening two Warwick beaches, City Park and Conimicut Point, after bacteria returned to safe levels. They had been closed for a week.
