PROVIDENCE —  In the days and weeks following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the strains of bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace" became a familiar sound, especially in New York City, where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed.

On Sunday, the 21st anniversary of the attacks, the melody reverberated off the marble walls of the State House as part of a ceremony recalling the attacks.

The ceremony was simple, including a bugler playing "Taps," a patriotic speech by Gov. Dan McKee and a reading of the names of and prayers for those — including nine Rhode Islanders — who died that day, plus those who perished in the succeeding War on Terror.

The centerpiece of the ceremony was the ringing of a bell four times at separate times in the ceremony, once for each passenger jet brought down during the attacks.

Besides Governor McKee, the ceremony was also attended by Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, General Treasurer Seth Magaziner and House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi.
