RI weather forecast: Snow likely for Thursday morning commute; weekend storm fizzles

Snow could hit Southern New England during the Thursday morning commute, but a potential storm this weekend looks like it will have little impact on the region, the National Weather Service says.

Southern New England on Wednesday should get a break from the recent (and future) cold, with the wind coming from the southwest and a high near 46 degrees under mostly sunny skies.

Starting around 4 a.m. Thursday, rain should move into the area, but it's but it's likely to change to snow as the temperature falls, and the Providence area should get 1 to 3 inches of snow, according to the Weather Service.

"Much colder air working in from the northwest should flip most areas to snow by 7 or 8 a.m.," the Weather Service says in its forecast discussion.

The National Weather Service says Rhode Island should get 1 to 3 inches of snow Thursday, much of it falling during the morning commute.

At this point, the Weather Service is forecasting mostly sunny skies for Saturday.

The Weather Service says it's "still monitoring a coastal or ocean storm for Saturday into Saturday night. While uncertainty continues on this potential system and some snow remains possible for southeastern New England, there is a trend toward an overall less-impactful system."
