Ribbons of Monroe has been awarded two grants from DTE and the Mall of Monroe.

According to Executive Director Michael LaHote, the funding will allow the nonprofit organization to continue offering support services and end-of-life planning for Monroe County cancer patients.

The organization, located at 15195 S. Dixie Highway, was started by LaHote in 2021 and offers assistance for Monroe County residents battling cancer and relies solely on grants, donations and fundraising. To date, LaHote has provided the majority of funding for the nonprofit organization.

Within the past 12 months, the organization has received two grants from DTE, the most recent in the amount of $5,000. In addition, the Cafaro Group, owners of the Mall of Monroe, has donated a total of $2,000 in grants.

With more than 30,000 of Monroe County residents currently diagnosed with cancer, LaHote said 100% of the grant money is used for support and services.

“As a nonprofit, we rely solely on grants, donations and fundraisers for our funding,” he said. “The services we provide include transportation, counseling and support groups, legal assistance, medical co-pays and payment for temporary housing until further assistance can be provided. We are a bridge for Monroe County residents needing help while they battle cancer.”
