Richard Hammond has criticised Just Stop Oil protesters for their action against an Aston Martin garage in London.

The climate activist group sprayed orange paint over one of the luxury car manufacturer's showrooms after they had previously targeted a Van Gogh painting in the National Gallery.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, the former Top Gear presenter was asked about the protests to which he said: "I mean, for one thing, that they're trying to draw attention to their cause, I get that.

"But a bunch of Aston Martins that won't do many miles a year are not going to have a great deal of impact."

Hammond also defended the carbon footprint of his new show which restores classic cars: "Most classic cars because they're old, the carbon footprint of their creation is long in the past.

"If they do less than 1,000 miles a year, their carbon footprint a year is about half that of your mobile phone or your laptop. Because we're keeping old things going that have already been made and the resources have been mined. Any carbon footprint in its creation has been done."

Richard Hammond's Workshop is about to premiere its second season on Discovery+. The show follows the Grand Tour presenter as he pursues his lifelong dream of setting up a classic car restoration workshop.

Hammond came up with the idea for the workshop after a local mechanic friend was forced to close his garage and thought the scenario would make for a good TV show.

While the first season saw Hammond setting up the workshop, the second will see him try and establish the business in the world of classic cars.

Outside of the TV series, Hammond does run the workshop as an actual business.
