RICHARD JOHNSON: Mercer Hotel’s owner steps away to ‘focus on other things’

Andre Balazs no longer owns the Mercer Hotel in Manhattan, the first of a dozen hotels he developed.

“There are so many great things to do, I figured why not sell it,” the celebrity hotelier said. “I stepped away to focus on other things.”

Ira Drukier and Richard Born, who were minority partners, are now in charge. Their BD Hotels comprises about 25 different businesses, including the Hotel Elysee, the Maritime Hotel and The Jane.

Balazs has been accused of groping multiple women — including the wife of actor Jason Bateman.

Balazs, who has union problems at Chateau Marmont in LA — because the landmark is non-union — is heading there from London soon.

The son of a doctor, Balazs laid off the Chateau staff 90 days before other hoteliers closed for COVID. “People thought I was overly dramatic, but everything I anticipated turned out to be right,” he told me.

Ghislaine Maxwell — in jail for 14 months and facing trial on charges of sex trafficking — seems to be having trouble paying her taxes.

The friend of Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in his cell two years ago, is listed among New York State tax delinquents as owing $1,562,000.

She must have spent more than that on legal bills already.

Tops on the list is Evgeny (Gene) Freidman, the biggest owner of medallion taxi cabs before Uber came along, at $18.7 million.

One man much lower on the list of 250 delinquents told me, “It’s one reason people leave New York and move to Florida.”

Elvis Presley’s .38 Smith & Wesson pistol ($78,500) is now for sale by M.S. Rau in New Orleans and online.

The revolver, with a handsome oak grip, was given by Elvis to his cousin, Billy Smith, who served as his administrative aide and was a member of the Memphis Mafia.

Elvis’ ex-wife Priscilla Presley once confessed, “If he saw somebody he didn’t like on the TV, he’d get his gun out and blow it up. Then he would tell his daddy to go get another TV.”

Elvis Presley memorabilia is having a resurgence. Recently, his white eyelet jumpsuit and cape sold for over a million dollars, while a racing helmet worn in the film “Viva Las Vegas” fetched $23,750, and a collection of his hair saved by the singer’s barber sold for $72,500 last Saturday.

The pop icon was a well-known collector of firearms. He possessed 37 guns when he died in 1977. They were also among his favorite items to gift along with his watches and jewelry.

Elvis famously presented a .357 Magnum revolver to Spiro Agnew in 1970, though the vice president was forced to return the firearm after he was brought up on corruption charges a year later.

M.S. Rau is also selling The King’s monogrammed TCB sunglasses ($74,500), his 14K gold watch ($22,500), and his diamond and black onyx ring ($32,500.)

Harry Styles will face a few signs held by single women at his sold-out Madison Square Garden concert Sunday.

The women, clients of matchmaker Maureen Tara Nelson, are inspired by Styles’ recently offered advice to a woman in the audience holding a sign that read “Should I text him?”

“Is he nice to you?” Styles started out, before issuing his verdict, no.

Nelson purchased seats throughout MSG hoping that Styles can help her clients feel inspired again to find love and companionship.

“Styles understands what singles are facing today,” Nelson said. “There’s more to love than just chemistry, it’s also about compatibility, and it’s clear that Styles gets that.”

Twenty-six years after “Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women” became a bestseller, it is being developed as a TV series by Sony.

The book, which chronicled the alleged sexual abuse of teenage models by model agents like Jean-Luc Brunel (now in jail in France) and Gerald Marie (sued in August by actress Carré Otis), has been optioned four times before but never got going.

Author Michael Gross told me, “Thank goodness there’s no statute of limitations on exposés.”

Retirement has its advantages, at least for Andrew Cuomo. The former governor has been seen around the Hamptons lately with an attractive brunette. Sources say he has taken her fishing. Striped bass are so romantic … Bruce Willis’ new film, “Survive the Game,” has cast Talent Concierge’s client, “The Bold and the Beautiful” star Sean Kanan, in a big role … Sir Darius Brown, the 14-year-old who creates bow ties for pups to get adopted, will receive the Young Leadership Award from the Tri-County Animal Rescue, at the penthouse of animal advocate Andrea Stark.
