Canton baseball player voted as the Journal Star high school athlete of the week

Jayson Kuzniar of the Canton baseball team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

The catcher, who received 512 of 1,063 votes, opened his senior season in a big way during Wednesday's 13-3 rout of Petersburg PORTA. Kuzniar went 5-for-5 with four RBI, batting cleanup for the Little Giants. He had a double and four singles as Canton pounded out 18 hits with four other Giants players having at least two hits.

Liz Grube, Limestone softball

Grube twirled a three-hit shutout in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Illinois Valley Central. The sophomore struck out seven in the Rockets' opener. She also scored the game's lone run off a run-scoring triple by Abby Heerman in the first inning for Limestone.

Zoe Kormah, Pekin girls soccer

Kormah scored a pair of goals in a season-opening victory for the Dragons. The sophomore tied the match, then scored the go-ahead tally in a 3-1 win over Bloomington Central Catholic last Tuesday. Her first goal came off an assist from Gabby Gonzales at 30:14, then Kormah added the game-winner 3:38 later thanks to Allie Lambe's assist.

Darrin Dussett, Richwoods boys track and field

Dussett was the 60-meter dash winner at last Tuesday's Big 12 Conference indoor meet at the Shirk Center in Bloomington. The senior's time of 7.06 seconds was .08 seconds better than the second-place finisher. He was also a second-place in the 200-meter dash (23.30 seconds) and was the sixth-place finishing the 4x200-meter relay (1:38.70).

Lena Jackson, Richwoods girls track and field

The sophomore won two events at the Big 12 Conference indoor meet on Monday at the Shirk Center in Bloomington. Jackson won the 60-meter (7.78 seconds) and 200-meter (26.3 seconds) dashes. Her fourth-place place finish in the long jump (16'0.5 feet) helped Richwoods (88 points) to a second-place team finish behind Normal Community (104.5 points).

Alexander Schroff, Metamora boys tennis

The senior posted a 3-0 record on Saturday as part of a four-team, indoor quad meet at The Clubs at River City. He grabbed a pair of singles victories, plus a doubles win in beating Richwoods, Springfield and Mundelein. Schroff, who is committed to play for Olivet Nazarene, capped his day later that night, playing the king in Metamora’s rendition of Cinderella.
